Purebuds, sign me up for 2.0

12 08 2008

So I just ordered a new pair of headphones to use at the gym. As much as I hate talking about what’s going on in my life, I just thought everyone reading this might like to know how awesome these things are supposed to be.

As soon as they arrive I’ll let ya’ll know how they work!

UPDATE

I have finally received my Purebuds and had a chance to test them out over the last week.

As you know, my old headphones looked a little like this:

So I went ahead and ordered some new ones.

The Purebuds are pretty good, retailing for 50 bucks, (a little less than what you would pay for similar ‘high end’ products) these guys really know how to pump out the sound.

They come with 3 different attachments that you hook on to the buds, one for bass boost, one for surround sound and one for regular enhanced listening. While all three of them excel at what they are supposed to do there are a couple of drawbacks.

First of all, when listening to the bass booster plugs they do amplify bass quite well but you really do notice the loss in treble. They are decent for house and crunk, but everything else gets kind of lost.

The Surround Sound plugs are AMAZING. They pump out sound as though you are actually listening to a 5.1 surround system. These earbuds are worth buying for this setting alone if there wasn’t one single drawback, I cannot get the bloody things to stay in my ears.

I don’t know if it’s because I have incredibly mis-shapen ears or something:

But I ended up having to tape them to my head so they would stay in long enough for a review. GREAT sound, bad fit, although I’m guessing it’s just myself and other small-eared brethren.

The all-around, enhanced listening plugs are actually pretty decent too at higher levels. Purebuds claim that they are ‘reverse-sound engineered’, meaning the sound shoots out before it shoots into your ear canal. This is supposed to allow you to listen longer, louder and harder.

It does mean that if you want decent sound quality you have to crank it though. I don’t really have a problem with that and I did notice that after an extended period of listening my ears were not ringing at all (which is definitely not normal) so that’s a definite plus.

I do like these earbuds and I probably will use them on a regular basis, but I’m really looking forward to 2.0 for small-eared folk.

Pros

-Nice design, good overall sound at higher levels, GREAT sound out of the Surround Sound plugs.
-Relatively inexpensive compared to similar products.
-Possible to listen at loud levels for extended periods without damage to your ears.

Cons

-Some of the plugs don’t fit too well.
-Sound has to be heightened for decent quality.
-Bass Boost plugs lack any kind of treble/mid range.

Great review and very solid feedback. The Purebuds are really innovative and yes the 3 audio tips are unique for custom listening experiences. I agree the surround sound tips do not fit in the ear, but I was told they are designed to rest on the outside of the ear in which helps give the surround sound effect.
